Healing Through the Body

Somatic Therapy

At Inner Strength Therapy, our Somatic Therapy offers a deeply healing, body-centered approach to trauma, emotional wounds, and chronic stress. Rather than focusing only on thoughts and behaviors, somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your body and release long-held tension, offering relief for anxiety, depression, trauma, and physical distress.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a form of psychotherapy that recognizes the innate connection between mind and body. It works from the premise that emotions, stress, and even trauma can become “stuck” in the body, manifesting as physical tension, pain, or chronic dysregulation. By tuning into bodily sensations, movement, breath, and posture, you can safely release that stored energy and promote deep healing.

Unlike traditional talk-only therapy, somatic work invites you to pay attention to what your body is holding, drawing awareness to physical sensations, posture, breath, and subtle shifts as you process emotional and traumatic material.

How Somatic Therapy Works, What to Expect in Sessions

During a somatic therapy session at Inner Strength Therapy, you may experience a blend of techniques tailored to your needs:

Body awareness & body scanning

Gentle guidance to connect with sensations in different parts of your body: noticing tension, areas of tightness, or numbness.

Breathwork & grounding exercises

Deep, intentional breathing to help calm the nervous system, regulate triggers, and support emotional release.

Movement, gentle stretching or expressive movement

Sometimes simple movement or mindful motion helps release stored tension or stuck energy in ways that words alone cannot.

Resourcing and nervous system regulation techniques

Identifying internal or external anchors of safety: resources such as comforting memories, grounding points, or supportive imagery: to stay grounded and regulate emotions during the process.

Integration & reflection

As sensations, memories, or emotions arise, we work to integrate them safely: helping you make sense of what emerges and build coping skills to navigate day-to-day life more skillfully.

Somatic therapy doesn’t always follow a “one size fits all” script: sessions are shaped around
your comfort, your history, and your personal healing journey.

Who Can Benefit from Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy can be especially helpful if you’re:

  • Experiencing trauma or PTSD, including developmental, attachment, relational, or complex trauma.
  • Struggling with anxiety, panic, or chronic stress, especially when accompanied by physical symptoms: muscle tension, tightness, headaches, or a sense of being “on edge.”
  • Battling depression, emotional numbness, or disconnect from your body / emotions, and wanting to rediscover vitality, groundedness, and a sense of connection to self.
  • Dealing with physical symptoms with no clear medical cause such as chronic pain, tension, or fatigue that may be tied to stress or emotional burden.
  • Struggling in relationships or intimacy, where trauma or past relational wounds affect the body’s capacity to trust, relax, or feel safe. (Somatic work can support increased embodiment, boundary awareness, and emotional regulation.)

Whether you’ve tried talk therapy and felt “stuck,” or you sense that your body is carrying more than your mind can name, somatic therapy offers a different entry point one through felt experience and embodied awareness.

Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?

If you’ve found that talk therapy alone hasn’t resolved your suffering, maybe you still feel tension, dissociation, or repeated cycles of emotional overwhelm, somatic therapy could be the next step.

At Inner Strength Therapy, we will work with you in a trauma-informed, compassionate, and personalized way to help you safely explore the messages your body holds and gradually release trapped tension, reconnect with your inner self, and reclaim a sense of safety, empowerment, and emotional balance.
